Verizon Wins 700mhz Auction

As you may know, the United States FCC has retired a large portion of the spectrum that has been dedicated to analog, the now famous 700mhz spectrum or “C” block. This is prime real estate for wireless providers and there were many bidders.
The smoke has cleared and Verizon has emerged the winner, with a bid of $4.7 billion. Owning this nationwide 22MHz block guarantees that Verizon has plenty of room to grow in the future.
Interestingly, the FCC placed open-access provisions on the sale, requiring that Verizon must allow devices from other carriers and outside applications to run on the network.
Verizon’s winning bid, combined with it’s recent conference where it clarified its “Any Device, Any App” policy, indicates that the #2 carrier has big plans and a roadmap for becoming the top dog carrier.
Let’s hope Verizon has some money left in the piggy bank to cover the looming class action Early Termination Fee lawsuit, which totals over $1 Billion in damages. You win some, you lose some.
